Why Your Instagram Profile Link Isn’t Working

Your Instagram profile link (instagram.com/yourusername) should direct anyone to your profile. When it doesn’t work, potential followers can’t find you and existing followers sharing your link reach a dead end.

Reason 1: You Changed Your Username

If you changed your Instagram username, old links with the previous username stop working immediately. Anyone using the old link gets a ‘Page Not Found’ error. Update all shared links with your new username: instagram.com/newusername. If you use a link-in-bio tool (Linktree, etc.), update it there too.

Reason 2: Account Is Private and Link Is Being Shared

Private accounts are visible at their profile URL to logged-in users who follow you, but not to logged-out visitors or non-followers. If someone not following you clicks your private profile link, they’ll see a restricted view. Switch to a public account if you want your link to be fully accessible to everyone.

Reason 3: Account Was Suspended or Disabled

Suspended or disabled Instagram accounts redirect to an error page. Check if you can still log into your account. If you can’t, your account may be suspended. Follow the appeal process to restore your account and your profile link.

Fix: Verify and Share the Correct Link

Go to your Instagram profile > tap the three dots > Copy Profile URL. This gives you the current correct link. Paste it into a browser to test before sharing. Always use the link provided by Instagram rather than manually typing a URL.

Fix: Use Instagram’s Link-in-Bio Feature

Instagram now allows one clickable link in your bio. Go to Edit Profile > Website and paste your desired URL. This link is the most visible and reliable way for followers to access your external content.
