What Instagram ‘Restricted’ Actually Means
Instagram’s Restrict feature is a privacy tool designed to reduce harassment without blocking someone entirely. When you restrict someone: their comments on your posts are only visible to them until you approve them, they can’t see when you’re online or when you’ve read their DMs, and their DMs go to a filtered folder. Instagram can also apply automatic restrictions to accounts violating policies.

How to Know If You’ve Been Restricted by Someone
Signs you’ve been restricted by another user: your DMs to them go to ‘Message Requests’ rather than their inbox, you can’t see their online status, and your comments on their posts show as ‘Pending’ rather than immediately visible.

To restrict: press and hold any comment by that person > Restrict. Or go to their profile > three dots > Restrict. To unrestrict: go to Settings > Privacy > Restricted Accounts and tap Unrestrict next to their name. You can also unrestrict directly from their profile > three dots > Unrestrict.
When Instagram Automatically Restricts You
Instagram can automatically restrict your account’s ability to comment, DM, or engage if you’ve received multiple user reports or violated community guidelines. This is different from being restricted by a specific user. Check Settings > Account > Account Status to see any platform-level restrictions on your account.
Removing Platform Restrictions
Platform-level restrictions from Instagram are temporary (usually 24-72 hours). Do not violate any guidelines during the restriction period. After the restriction lifts, resume normal activity within Instagram’s rate limits to avoid triggering another automatic restriction.
