How WhatsApp Disappearing Messages Work
Disappearing messages in WhatsApp automatically delete after your chosen timer: 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. This helps maintain privacy without manually deleting conversations. When this feature stops working, messages persist longer than intended or never disappear at all.

Fix 1: Verify Disappearing Messages Are Enabled
Open the conversation > tap the contact name at the top > Disappearing Messages. Check which timer is set. If ‘Off’ is selected, enable it and choose a timer. Both parties must have WhatsApp updated enough to support the feature, but only one person needs to enable it — the setting applies to the whole chat.
Fix 2: Update WhatsApp
Disappearing messages require WhatsApp version 2.19.71 or later on Android and 2.19.71 or later on iOS. If either party has an older version, messages won’t disappear. Update WhatsApp via the App Store or Google Play. Both parties need the update for the feature to work correctly.

View Contact OptionsFix 3: Check If Media Was Saved
Even when disappearing messages are on, if a recipient downloads or saves a photo/video before it disappears, they keep a copy. Disappearing messages only remove them from the WhatsApp chat thread — they can’t delete saved media from the recipient’s camera roll. This is a design limitation, not a bug.
Fix 4: Default Message Timer
WhatsApp allows setting a default disappearing message timer for all new chats. Go to Settings > Privacy > Default Message Timer. Set your preferred timer. This applies to all new conversations going forward without needing to set it individually for each chat.
Fix 5: Group Chats
In WhatsApp groups, only admins can enable disappearing messages. If you’re not an admin, you can’t change this setting. Ask a group admin to enable disappearing messages for the group via Group Info > Disappearing Messages.
