Why Your Instagram Reels Sound Has Stopped Working
Reels without sound get far fewer likes and comments. Sound issues stem from device settings, app glitches, audio format problems, or account restrictions. Here are 8 proven fixes.

Fix 1: Unmute the Reel
The simplest fix: tap the speaker icon in the bottom right of the Reel player. Instagram remembers your mute preference across sessions. If you previously muted Reels, all future Reels will be muted until you unmute.
Fix 2: Check Device Volume
Ensure your device volume is turned up. On iPhone: press the Volume Up button or go to Settings > Sounds. On Android: use volume buttons or Settings > Sound. Also check that Silent/Vibrate mode is off — iPhones in silent mode will mute all app audio including Instagram.
Fix 3: Clear App Cache
On Android: Settings > Apps > Instagram > Storage > Clear Cache. On iPhone: Delete and reinstall Instagram (iOS doesn’t allow direct cache clearing). Corrupted cache files frequently cause audio playback failures.

Outdated app versions have known audio bugs. Check the App Store or Google Play for updates. After updating, restart your device to ensure all system audio components reload.
Fix 5: Check Bluetooth Audio
If Bluetooth headphones are connected but not near you, audio plays through them instead of your phone’s speaker. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and disconnect any audio devices, or simply bring your Bluetooth headphones closer.
Fix 6: Restart the App
Force close Instagram (swipe up on iPhone, or use Recent Apps on Android) and reopen. This clears any audio session conflicts between Instagram and other apps.
Fix 7: Check Video Upload Audio Format
If sound is missing only on your own uploaded Reels, the issue may be the audio format. Instagram supports AAC audio only. MP3 or other formats may upload without sound. Re-encode your video with AAC audio using a free converter before uploading.
Fix 8: Reinstall Instagram
If all else fails, uninstall and reinstall Instagram. This resets all app settings and audio configurations to defaults. You won’t lose any posts or data, but you’ll need to log in again.
