What Temporary Account Lock Means
A temporary lock is different from account disablement. When locked, you can view your content but cannot post, message, or change profile information. This typically happens when Meta detects suspicious activity like multiple failed login attempts, unusual access location, or potential compromise.
Method 1: Email Verification (Fastest)
When locked, Facebook usually offers email verification as the first option. Check the email associated with your account for a verification code from Facebook. Enter the 6-digit code on the lock screen. This typically resolves the lock within 5 minutes.
Method 2: SMS Code
If email verification isn’t available, Facebook will send an SMS to your registered phone number. Ensure your phone has signal and can receive SMS from international shortcodes. Enter the received code to unlock your account.
Method 3: Identity Verification
For accounts without accessible email or phone, Facebook may request a government-issued ID. Upload a clear photo of your passport, driving licence, or national ID. Facebook reviews these within 1-3 business days and unlocks accounts upon successful verification.
Method 4: Trusted Friends
If you previously set up Trusted Friends for account recovery, you can ask them to provide recovery codes. Each friend receives part of the code; you need input from 3-5 friends to unlock. This is only available if you configured it before being locked out.
What to Do After Unlocking
Immediately change your password, enable two-factor authentication, review active sessions and log out unrecognized devices, and check connected apps for anything suspicious. A temporary lock is often a warning sign of a compromise attempt.
